So what do you do when your doctor tells you she needs a further blood test to check your liver function, and that you should stop drinking alcohol for a while so that the results can be confirmed?

This coming the week before a 2 week holiday to the Western Cape wine region of South Africa!

I did what any sensible person would do, and decided to carry on as normal and postpone the blood test until such a time as I could fit in a week without booze.

The holiday started of fairly weel, and I was looking forward to eating pretty sensibly – lots of fish, a little red meat and very little processed food. We were looking forward to daily swims in the pool at the villa and lots of getting out and about and walking as much as possible.

As it was, my wife was set-upon by the other woman in our party of 4 and ended up in tears at a restaurant table in Franschoech! Having been told the next morning that we were ruining their anniversary holiday, we bailed out of South Africa, changed the flights and were back home a week early. What a disaster!

The problem with the diet now was that we had no food in the house, I wasn’t due back at work for another week and we were both pretty down about everything. I’m not saying that we drank more wine than usual, but we didn’t cut back as much as my doctor would have liked…

The moral af the tail?

You can never really be sure how anyone is going to react to a situation, even if they are supposed to be a ‘friend’. We will almost certainly be returning to South Africa, and very certainly on our own..

I saw something on our scales 2 weeks ago that I’ve never seen before, and that was my weight at over 16 stone! Time for some serious rethinking.

This followed a trip to a new doctors practice and a new patient medical, where they informed me that I ate too much, drank too much and didn’t exercise enough. No surprises there then…

What did surprise me was that my blood pressure was high enough to deserve some medication and that my cholesterol was low enough to prompt to doctor to ask if I was already on statins – a definate NO!

So for the last 2 weeks I’ve been having a salad for lunch instead of sandwiches and attempting to cut down on alcohol consumption, especially the couple of glasses of red wine each evening. Having said that, I’m on holiday to the Paarl wine region for 2 weeks before my next blood test, which doesn’t bode well for the sext set of liver function results!

Oh, and I must stop eating chocolate for breakfast and try to get out for a walk each lunchtime!.

Having got my weight back down to mid 15 stones, I’ll have to see if I can get it much lower without some serious effort!

Dr. Sanford Siegal's COOKIE DIET™

Well bad news, for me at least, after the last diet weigh in.

I’d put on a pound in 2 weeks!

I suppose I should have expected it following a boozy couple of days in London and another couple of lunchtimes in the pub, but it still came as a bit of a shock.

I’m not sure this dieting lark is that good for me as I’ve now come down with a cold – it must be because I’m a bit run down through malnourishment! That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it! It’s either that or I’m allergic to the ‘invisible’ cloud of volcanic ash that’s been haunting the UK for the last week.

Well you know the law – ‘Feed a col and starve a fever’. So I thought I’d start today with a toasted bacon baquette – purely medicinal you understand. I’ll get back on the diet wagon when I feel a bit better later in the week.

:)

Well having just come back from a rather indulgent cruise I’m afraid a new diet is on the cards!

I checked with my doctor yesterday and I’m definately overweight (no surprises there then..!!). Just waiting for the results of blood tests to see how bad my cholesterol levels are. Oh, and the blood pressures up a bit and I’ve been advised to get a BP monitor at home!

I’ve started by cutting out the twice weekly hot bacon sandwich for breakfast, which really is a major sacrifice, and the twice weekly lunchtime trip to the pub is getting the chop as well! If I really have to go to the pub (on the grounds of teambuilding, social networking etc) then I’ll be having a gin & slimline tonic instead of 3 pints of lager…

Lunch in general has gone from a couple of sandwiches to something low fat and low carb. At the moment (until I find something a little more interesting) that means a packet of either chicken or turkey ham.. very boring!

OK, so incentives?

Well apart from hopefully living a bit longer I’ve promised myself that if I can lose a stone by August then I’ll change my car.

Mmmmm.. watch this space!

:)

Well I know what I’m doing here..

I was a quite FED UP with being overweight and finding very little in the way of assistance of advice… FOR MEN..!!

I can’t say I have ever really been incredibly fat, but having reached nearly 16 stone, and being classified as obese, I decided it was time that I did something about it.

This then is my story so far, upon which I hope there will be lots of comments and advise which we can all share.

Please browse through the site and add any comments that you feel are appropriate. I think we all need as much help as we can get..!! Then of course there’s our online store with a host of books, DVDs and supplements all aimed at us ‘overweight’ blokes!
